K-Gr 2—'Twas the night before second grade, I was out with my friend', ' We couldn't believe summer vacation had come to an end. The tow-headed boy narrates the story, along with his slightly taller tow-headed friend, Jack. They look forward to seeing classmates from first grade, reading longer poems, having a tough teacher, and delving into chapter books, a new adventure for them. The diverse school population includes two children with brown skin, a girl in a hijab, an Asian boy, and Jack, who proudly display their new shoes due to growth spurts. The real surprise of second grade is not the chapter books but the revelation that the father is the new teacher, promising not to play favorites. Though the rhymes may be a bit awkward and the plot lacking, the book attempts to capture the essence of second graders' experiences. The chapter book theme fades, and the father's new role as teacher feels forced, failing to create the anticipated excitement. VERDICT: For an engaging second-grade tale, consider 'Get Ready for Second Grade, Amber Brown' by Paula Danziger.
